01 · Perth
The photograph that would not date itself
Simon had a picture of his grandfather, Henry “Cuth” Knight, in kit with mates heading to a footy game in Dunedin. A new colourise tool made it glow. He could not tell if Cuth was twenty, thirty, or forty. He did not remember the birth year. Late in Perth, a call to Sydney might not be answered. He opened another tab.
02 · The rabbit hole
Houses, newspapers, then Seattle
A 1930s Dunedin cricket note. Real-estate records of the house Tony was raised in. Then a WordPress blog run by a Tim Knight in Seattle — a city that had never featured in the family stories Simon grew up with. On that blog: John Knight, Wapping, a soap and candle works, Royal Primrose. Hundreds of thousands of Knights exist. The chance this was the same line felt like zero. It still felt familiar.
03 · The jackpot email
Tony asked Barry. Barry wrote to Tim.
Dad did what families do. He asked. Cousin Barry Knight and Tim began a back-and-forth. A few days later Rosie forwarded an email. Barry in all caps: we have hit the jackpot. The NZ family had been chasing the Black Sheep for years. Excitement is not a certificate. The English soap trunk is real. Whether the Gore drover is the 1877 English son is still C-001 — open. Age 42 in November 1922 is not a man born 3 February 1877.
04 · Why it became a house
Tony and Rosie will not be here forever
Simon is the child of Rosie and Tony, grandson of Gladys and Cuth, brother of Kate and James. When they go, much of what they know goes with them — how Cuth met Gladys, what Gladys was like at school, the recipes measured by pinch. Ancestry would take the list and sell it. This project is the refusal: a vault for paper, a public window for what may be shown, and a form so cousins can send a name without publishing a living date.
05 · Names
KnightConnect became KNIGHTBORN
The May 2026 invitation still called it KnightConnect. The public brand is now KNIGHTBORN — the living line. The vault still uses PersonIDs. Tim’s blog remains his. We link it. We do not paste it. The Opportunity Network is a later, consent-only room. Medical files are not collected.
